This project called for the design of interior common areas for High Park Suites Residence which comprised of the lobby and entrance drop off areas, sky courts and amenity spaces. MIL Design was challenged to push the boundaries by seamlessly integrating urban living lifestyles with green living, business, leisure and community. The common areas are designed for residents and visitors to use as an extension of their homes and to create a unique, sustainable and holistic community for the Gen-Y.
Residential Common areas, sky garden, sky court, lobby areas, residential lobby, common facilities interior, apartment drop off, business centre
In keeping with the luxe branding, sophisticated timber veneers, bronze mirrors, curated artwork, customized rugs, customized lightings and feature walls designed to look like art pieces were used. The drop-off featured high 18feet curved ceilings. The business centre featured customized workpods for private meetings. Perched on 30ft high columns customized aluminium trellis are used at the sky pavilion to enhance a sculptural birdcage effect. Acoustic panels and movable walls were used for flexibility. The children's room used easy maintenance polyurethane fabric and rounded edges for safety.
The design evolved over four years from design til implementation works in response to changing design function, technology and briefs. This was to ensure precise coordination and to avoid abortive works to clients. This was one of the most challenging whereby there was no physical building for us to gauge. Due to the long period, trends and client's brief evolved and there had been multiple amendments and variant orders which required quick turnaround on our side. Some of the many challenges include close coordination with structural, M&E and architectural team consultants, a tight budgetary of £550,000.00 and working closely with the client’s multiple departments. As the space is for public use, safety issues and maintenance is a key to the design and final selection of the lightings and furniture especially at outdoor areas. At some spaces with low ceiling and structural restrictions, lightings and materiality is used to create heights and spaciousness. The designs have also evolved due to unforseen factors like very strong winds at the sky courts, thus omitting hanging lightings and replacing furnitures with fibreglass moulded materials and other fibrous material for better weather maintenance.
The project started in June 2016 and completed in September 2020.
Overall the project comprised of the lobby and entrance dropoff areas on the ground floor. On the 7th and 8th floor are the amenity spaces like Children’s & Party Room, Business Centre, Multipurpose Hall, Café and Pool Pavilions, management office and reading room. On the 18th,21st and 23rd floors are the triple level Sky Courts, Sky Deck and Sky pavilion. We designed the Sky Court and Sky Pavillion like a sculptural lit birdcage which could be viewed from far to enhance branding. Residents get to enjoy these different ambiences and functions at different times of the day.
We researched on the new way young people lived by doing surveys online and having interviews to see their needs. We wanted to grasp how technology like wireless, wifi and mobile devices have changed the way they live or use spaces. We concluded that many of the new urban generation prefer smaller, intimate areas. They also prefer more landscaping, sustainable living and cosy nooks. Entertaining at home over weekends is also a popular activity among these generation in malaysia hence we concluded that it is better to create small, intimate spaces of unique ambience and concept
Every space has the residents and tropical environment in mind. People can work at the business centre, plan events or do yoga at the multipurpose hall, meet with work associates amidst lush surroundings at the Sky Courts, and finish the day with a rooftop swim. Lobby areas are designed like wow factor hotel arrival points. Using an interplay of bold graphics, lightings, dark tones and pop colours inspired by sunrise and sunset, our design features focal nooks for the residents to work or play
