Unique Properties

The Oppo Enco Q1 wireless noise cancelling headphones deliver great sound quality with high wearing comfort. The unibody and ergonomically designed neckband with its seamless sleek surface ensure all-day comfort and hygiene for users. The powerful hybrid active noise cancelling function allows users to enjoy crystal clear music without any unwanted ambient noise on-demand with a single press of a button.

Production Technology

The contoured shape neckband is over-molded thermoplastic polyurethane with a built-in memory titanium alloy thread, allowing us to establish a strongly built quality neckband that can retain its shape despite bending and twisting. The earbuds are reinforced with Polycarbonate - Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene composite, housing with stainless steel outer plate. The in-ear silicone ear tips are double injection-molded to ensure dual firmness with comfort and form an additional physical barrier to seal out noise.

Design Challenge

First of all, the design needs to balance the form and functionality, ensuring ergonomic comfort, ease of use and portability. Secondly, since Oppo Enco Q1 was the first model of the Oppo Enco family, it had to establish its own product identity and radiate the Oppo Enco design value through a unique form and design language.

Project Duration

The project started in December 2018 in Shenzhen, China and was released in September 2019.

Operation Flow

All controls are placed on the same side, allowing single-handed operation for users. The interaction is kept simple with only 3 buttons: the multi-function button to control power and Bluetooth pairing; volume buttons to control volume and switch songs; the mode button to activate noise cancelling function and switch between 3 immersive sound modes.

Research

The design team conducted rounds of user interviews, focus groups and workshops to identify the main user scenario and user needs. The ambient noise while listening to music had been the top pain points for wireless headphones through research, which then led to a clearer brief of designing an active noise cancelling wireless headphones for daily use. Several rounds of mockups were later tested with our targeted customer audience to validate the design.

Inspiration

When it comes to wireless neckband headphones, the wearing experience of the neckband has been very crucial, as it is constantly in contact with the skin. Therefore, the design team wished to design a unibody and high-built quality neckband where there are no seams touching the skin, thus reducing trapped dirt after extended use and allowing easy maintenance.
