Design Event for Hong Kong Trade Development Council
DesignInspire was a 3 day exhibition event set in Hong Kong and dedicated to promoting the design industry. The event organizer requested an eco-friendly approach into elevating the show spatial design. From this, a new set of rules were devised for the design, these include minimizing onsite waste, repurposing materials once the show was over and avoiding creating unwanted material offcuts. Under the concept Inside Out plywood and hired scaffolding were predominantly used. The result was a raw and neutral look that juxtaposed the organizer's graphics and the exhibitors' contents.

DesignInspire was an event platform for global creative elites, design brands, design associations and institutes to showcase their creativities. The event organiser wanted an eco-friendly approach to envelope and uplift the communal spaces. A concept called Inside Out was created. To minimize onsite waste a new set of rules were developed before the project began. The result was a raw and neutral design setting to uplift the ambience of the event.

The main materials used for the spatial design were plywood panelling, off-the-shelf fixing, hired scaffolding, reusable aluminium structure, digital graphic print and sticker. The organiser’s design work includes the reception counter, entrance treatment, two open workshop, communal product display areas and the open forum. Due to the limited 3-day onsite move in, the last days was used for fine tune lighting, audio, art direction and visual merchandizing.
The challenge was to find a design concept that would fit the brief of being eco-friendly as well as able to uplift the spatial image of DesignInspire environment. Our design team decided to go beyond the aesthetic periphery and a new set of rules were created to minimise as much onsite waste as possible. The result was an ethical approach in providing a neutral and raw event design. The aesthetics also helped to juxtapose the finished products being exhibited at the show.
The project duration was 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. Located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, the event ran for 3 days from the 5th until the 7th of December in 2019. Only 3 days were allowed for the onsite move in and set up.
The entrance wall and reception counter at the concourse provides the first impression to the Inside Out concept. The raw and neutral aesthetic developed from plywood panels and scaffolding highlight against the yellow and black graphics is used throughout the event to indicate the organiser’s work. This aesthetic helps to clearly define, the wayfinding, the open forum space, the 2 open workshop areas, communal product display zones etc. The layout was open and created for self-exploration.
This idea derived from researching and dissecting various methods of building construction. This led us to examine the inside of a temporary wall structures in theatres sets and turning them inside out to expose all its workings. This was how the Inside Out concept began. Only locally sourced untreated plywood panels, off-the-shelf fixings and hired scaffolding were used to envelop the DesignInspire design. Making this least wasteful and eco-friendly method to erect a 3-day event.
Inspiration came from the challenges to be eco-friendly whilst enabling an image uplift. To do this, we kept the build production simple and minimal. After researching many alternatives, the details of wall structures in theatres seem most apt and devised the concept Inside Out was born. This idea was about turning a temporary wall structure inside out to expose all its workings. Untreated plywood panels, off-the-shelf fixings and hired scaffolding was chosen to decor the DesignInspire.
