The main material for interior finishings is concrete, tile, and wood, aiming to create a resort hotel with local features. Ryukyu limestone, a material peculiar to the region, and green stones from Indonesia were also used the mix. A local artist handcrafted the indigo-dyed cushions and foot throws. The local ceramic works are also displayed as artwork; they're made using areca leaves sourced and appreciated in the local area. The glass pendant light fixtures were also designed to collaborate with local Ryukyu glass artists, which adds brilliance in a simple space that respects nature.
This project scheme was planned in a unique way of renovating 6 buildings, including the reception, developing new buildings around them, and operating it under one hotel brand. The development reused the existing building without demolishing it by consideration of sustainability. The existing building deteriorated severely over time, and it took much time to examine the renovation method. The old furniture left in the building was repaired and placed in the new hotel's interior. An interior design that blends old and new elements has been achieved as a result.
The project started in April 2016 and finished in May 2019 in Miyako Island, Okinawa, Japan. Miyako Island is located 300 kilometers south of Okinawa Main Island and 100 kilometers north of the Yaeyama Islands. It is known for some of Japan's best beaches and a great destination for snorkeling and diving in the coral reefs. The subtropical climate provides mild weather year-round.
The hotel guests can retreat to a place surrounded by beautiful nature and regain themselves in ultimate hideaway locations. Guests can appreciate their own private villas' privacy while enjoying meals and drinks at the restaurant and bar attached to the reception building. The hotel staffs are quite knowledgeable of the islands' hidden gems and become guests' concierge for the day. Marine attractions like stand-up puddles and wellness programs like beach yoga are provided for the guests' pleasure.
The project team researched the history of traditional culture and crafts in Miyako Island to create a design with regional characteristics rather than a design brought in from the outside. The designers worked directly with local artists to create original artworks incorporated into space as design elements. Aiming to create scenery that respects magnificent nature, the landscape designers studied the local vegetation and created a landscape design that is familiar to the community.
The proposed site is 600-meter long, located between lush forests and the sea, where guests can feel the majestic nature. The guest room is constructed as a simple and modern single-story building to coexist with the rich natural environment. The effortless interior design creates a space that allows guests to feel the outside environment's richness. The design also conveys warmth, color, and region's culture in a refined space that respects outside scenery.
