Perforated shelving divides the space into a living room and a reading area connected to the sky garden. It affords occupants privacy, encouraging them to leave the view open to its sky garden, rather than closing it from the prying eyes of neighbours. The perforated shelves by surreptitiously providing storage space and gives the living room a clean appearance, while allowing the reading area to bathe in natural sunlight. The ceiling creates a subtle demarcation between different spaces using a combination of both timber and a simple white, apartment and house typologies enjoy a harmonious coexistence.

As individual preferences and needs change over time, flexibility of space is the key to effective interior design. With this in mind, this project gives the occupants freedom to customize their own living room, dispensing with the idea of a traditionally fixed TV wall. The TV wall is treated as one piece of sculptural form, the wall is made with removable panels, as opposed to using a fixed construction methodology, which means the entire wall can be removed if need be. Black mirrors also fold down from the split ceiling, wrapping the wall with a stone base, which gives the wall a three dimensional feel.
Different colours and materials all come together as one, while also complementing one another through well-managed proportions and compositions. The use of colour treatment and built form circulation guidance enriches the design intention, echoing the theme of sky living and enlivening the true essence of being at home.
This project started in August 2020 and completed in January 2021 in Taichung, Taiwan.
The ceiling forms the circulation guidance, gently ushering occupants through the apartment. To start, the black mirror ceiling continues from lift lobby through to the corridor at the entry, creating a sense of fluidity leading into the dining area. At this point, the material shifts from mirror to timber, bringing with it a serene sense of calmness. The timber ceiling then splits into a combination of blue and white, transporting occupants into the living room and sky garden.
An observation of human behavior, activity and interaction with space. It explores the definition of home, creating feelings of calm, recuperation and being immersed. The relationship between space and furniture composition, coming together in one integrated design approach.
Blue magpie nests, suspended in the sky garden, serves as inspiration for this project. Regarded traditionally as an auspicious symbol as well as a national treasure. Hence, a home in the sky places great emphasis on vitality, happiness, playfulness and relaxation. Every space can accommodate habits and different activities of the inhabitant, while also creating a sense of connection between them. The dialogue and balance between the colour of each space, as well as the furniture composition, draws people in to discover the true essence of what is means to be at home.
