Production Technology

The brochure was printed by MGI Digital Technology (Konica Minolta) in order to offer special effects (including spot UV coating, thick layers of silver and gold foils) on brochure cover so that people could even feel its deep reflection, embossing and golden effect with hands. The advantage of digital printing is that the quantity could even be a little and thus the cover design could be in a series of color variant.

Design Challenge

Designer has been tested out more than hundred times in order to capture the magical and poetic moment where the digital ink could form in harmonious state of art - offering the best composition in terms of positive and negative spaces that could be easily adapted in many areas including mask and sizable backdrop and digital ads. Designer could not imagine the perfect composition until it came to appear on the screen after a long period of trial.

Project Duration

The project duration lasts for three months. This is a commercial project in Hong Kong.

Operation Flow

Starting the design by trial and error, mixing physical ink and then imitating through digital medium. Designer did not know which methods of design could reach its optimum composition and design until it came to reality. A lot of trials are not successful due to messy presentation and unpleasant look and feel.

Research

Designer tried to challenge the common mind set that design should be well-planned and carefully considered in all matters - seems that there should be a formula to do design. In fact, the most exciting thing is that design should be highly original, expect the unexpected, unique and moved.

Inspiration

This project is an invitation project that covers a wide range of adaptation, including digital backdrop, sign board, brochure, invitation card, souvenir and mask.Through capturing the magical moment of an artisan who is mixing various vivid colors to create masterpiece of print works. The present design signifies the Art of Fusing between visual designers and experienced print makers - co-creating a new form of object of desire using colors and foils (digital prints). We never know the end result and that is why we keep trying each time.
