SWISBABY Weight Loss Spine Support Schoolbag is a backpack designed for teenagers aged 10-15. The exterior part of the backpack is crafted from polyester with a water-resistant coating to provide waterproofing feature. The lining is made of polyester, also with a waterproof coating. The high elastic suspension belt is constructed from high elastic fibers that are woven and sewn. The back cushion material is crafted from foamed polyethylene (PE) and the light strip is illuminated by LED.
In the design stage, it was challenging to identify an appropriate measure of elasticity of the elastic fibers and select a suitable high elastic material. The designer has to consider a proper extent of weight load on back that keeps the suspension device reasonably reducing weight under normal condition and yields an appropriate level of elasticity depending on specific loads, and the material used should be elastic and durable enough to mitigate the impacts of loads, but not too elastic, failing which the backpack may be unstable.
The project kicked off in Quanzhou, Fujian in in April 2023. With the weight loss spine support schoolbag projects released, we worked with the Ergonomics Research Center of Anhui Agricultural University to test and run product parameters, until the finished product design wrapped up on 20 December 2023.
The high elastic suspension device in the shoulders area of the schoolbag absorbs the weight of the backpack and spreads the force by compression and stretching when user walks with it on his back, thus reducing the impact on shoulders. When walking with a schoolbag on shoulders, the bulged design of the back cushion waist provides extra support and stability to help the user keep a normal spinal curve when walking, the spinal area of the hollow, non stressed design provides no extra support, leaving the spine free to maintain its natural curvature and avoiding hunch over.
As medical expert recommended that the weight loading on back should not exceed 10-15% of body weight, a standard laid down for the sake of protecting spinal health and preventing back injuries. The attempt to carry a load exceeding the reasonable value may impose undue pressure and burden on the back and spine, as this may cause discomfort, pain or even injury.
The fact that teenagers aged 10-15 are mainly students and exposed to the risk of safety accidents while going to and leaving school is a global concern to be resolved. In response to poor visibility at night, designers have added light sets to schoolbags to improve individual visibility, thus reducing the likelihood of traffic accidents. And it is important to protect the normal growth and development of this age group, as they are going through a crucial developmental stage. In this sense, efforts to help them grow well and build a correct body shape are considered of paramount importance.
