Bolaman is a contemporary architectural interpretation of a centuries old Genoese coastal town. Positioned on natural rock formations once protected by Genoese walls, the project brings new life to Bolaman by reconnecting its historical layers with modern spatial strategies. It blends memory, topography and cultural continuity to create a meaningful and context aware built environment.

A composite system of reinforced concrete, exposed steel, and locally sourced stone defines the structural palette. This hybrid assembly supports open spans, tectonic rhythm, and integration with stepped terrain and natural ventilation.
A main challenge of the project was to express Bolaman layered historical identity through spatial language while adapting to the steep and fragmented terrain of the coastal cliffs. This dual context required a sensitive architectural approach shaped by memory, geography and form, allowing the design to respond both to the physical conditions of the site and to the cultural depth of the place.
Situated in Bolaman, a historic coastal settlement in northern Turkey, the project began in October 2023 and finalized in February 2024. Known for its Genoese heritage and layered topography, Bolaman offers a rare context where cultural memory and natural landscape intersect.
The spatial journey unfolds through a layered sequence of exhibition, wellness, and hospitality areas. Circulation is guided by stepped platforms, shifting axes and landscape integration offering a diverse spatial rhythm and a continuous dialogue between built and natural environments.
The project is based on historical and topographic research of the Bolaman region, examining archival maps, paintings, and urban morphology. Studies focused on climate responsive architecture and material reuse to ensure cultural and environmental integration.
Bolaman holds historical value found in Genoese maps, French Orientalist paintings and Black Sea chronicles. Based on this visual and narrative archive, the project turns cultural memory into a spatial expression. Through architecture shaped by history and geography, it creates a meaningful connection between the past and present, offering a living experience rooted in the identity of place and time.
