Unique Properties

Topsy Stool is designed to grow with children. Featuring reversible base planks, it shifts flexibly between two modes. When the curve faces up, it serves as a playful rocking horse, and when inverted, it becomes a stable stool for daily scenarios like reading or resting. A detachable grab handle lets it adapt as needs change over time. Its clean silhouette and natural color palette complement modern homes, making it a quiet companion for little ones throughout their growth journey.

Production Technology

Crafted from premium European AAA grade beech wood, the stool features a solid structure, fine grain, and a warm tone, conveying a natural, safe, and comfortable visual identity. Built with substantial thickness, the entire piece stably supports a load of up to 100 kilograms. Finished with sustainable water based paint applied through electrostatic spraying and refined by hand sanding, the surface becomes smooth and skin friendly, reliably resisting daily wear for lasting beauty and performance.

Design Challenge

The key challenge of this design lay in balancing its roles as a symbol of childhood joy, an element of home aesthetics, and a practical companion that adapts as a child grows. To this end, the design retains the curved base of the rocking horse as an emotional anchor and incorporates reversible base planks for functional switching. Its minimalist form features a natural wood tone and Clay White, with vibrant accents like Azure Green to create a modern visual identity full of playful charm.

Project Duration

This product was designed and developed in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, starting in March 2025 and finishing in Lishui, Zhejiang that August. It was launched in December 2025.

Operation Flow

Simply unscrew the four screws on the stool legs and flip the base planks to switch between a playful rocking horse and a sturdy stool. The grab handle is fully removable to suit both usage scenarios. For child safety, the design features a fifteen degree rocking angle, a rocking lock mechanism, and a widened four point support base, working together to prevent tipping and ensure peace of mind during playful moments.

Research

The design and development originates from an insight into the classic rocking horse, a cherished symbol of childhood that is often limited by poor applicability and a short lifespan. In response, this product addresses modern family needs for practicality, aesthetic harmony, and lasting emotional connection. With an innovative structure, it transforms the traditional rocking horse into a versatile companion that grows with little ones through every stage of early life.

Inspiration

Drawing on the timeless rocking horse, the design captures the simple joy and gentle sway of motion to evoke childhood happiness and warmth. Traditional versions, limited by fixed sizes and forms, tend to serve only briefly and often clash with modern interiors. These two factors inspire the creation of Topsy Stool, which reimagines this iconic childhood toy with versatility and lasting relevance for daily life while retaining its playful essence.

Project Overview

Topsy Stool has been a Silver winner in the Baby, Kids' and Children's Products Design award category in the year 2025 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill.
