We wanted to make the work more different from other products on the market today, so we used "simplicity" as our main design style. On the fish relief, frosting technique was used to make the work look more stereoscopic. The red dots on forehead of fish were made by thermal transfer printing technology.
From a technical aspect, due to the limitation of technology, it is hard to make sculpture on a vertical surface of bottom of a bottle. It took us quite a long time to search for good technology to complete the work. So it is rare to see any products like ours in market today.
The project started in August 2019 in Shenzhen China and finished in May 2020 in Shenzhen China.
Firstly, the bottle shape with a narrow top and wide bottom is easier to hold when pouring Chinese spirit. Secondly, Chinese like to drink Chinese spirit when holding banquets and parties. The elements on the work will fit more on happy occasions like wedding and celebration. And it is also more convenient for consumer to identify when choosing products. Besides, the core image of two fish together means Chinese "Tai Chi" and "Yin Yang" culture, expressing a good quality of pursuing happiness and respecting nature in China, and bring good luck and wealth to Chinese.
The two designers read lots of literature to research about what represents the most the culture of "happiness" in China. They chose Chinese Dragon at first. But then they decided to choose fish instead of Chinese Dragon since fish is more common for people and more closed to real life. It could also perfectly deliver a clear message of luck and hope as well as the desire of freedom. That was what designers wanted to show: like people's respect to nature since Chinese believes in animism, and they always believe that nature will show them good signs, and bring good message to them.
The culture of "happiness" accounts for a large proportion in the daily life of Chinese people. This work is called "Xi Lin Men", means "Approaching Happiness" in English. Therefore, we were inspired by elements related to "happiness" in our innovation and design like a pair of fish that means "happiness" and "rich", red color that means "good luck comes at once", and bamboo that means "keep rising steadily" etc. We would like to bring good hope and luck to people through the work.
Xi Lin Men Alcohol Beverage Package has been a Bronze winner in the Packaging Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
