Staff Cafeteria for YuQiang & Partners
The Staff Cafeteria located in the core of the Shenzhen Bay area, provides people a place to both dine and relax. After rigorous research, the designers adjusted the regional structure and the setting of the seat ratio to keep the dynamic line in an order at peak time. Interior decoration like bright colors, a large area of wood veneer and different lights by careful coordination enhances the people’s experience in this space. 'Organized, yet different' is the design concept of the project, and also reflects the attributes of this city.

Change is a desire in our hearts, just like identity. Designers use a virtual block structure to break up the long, monotonous space. Vertical gaps enrich the visual hierarchy. The elaborately built organization structure creates endless fun for those passing through during peak hours. Vibrant colors and geometric patterns with different textures replace the boring grey-white pattern. Bold contrasts tantalize the eyes, creating a bright and lively focus to successfully reduce visual noise.

To meet the requirement of 500 people dine together, handling the dynamic lines has become the primary focus of the design. The designers set up serving access respectively in the noodle area, Chinese food area and salad bar to avoid congestion, which effectively saves time and then enhances dining experience. Also, to avoid the noisy dining environment in the canteen, a large number of mineral and wool panels are used on the ceilings and walls to absorb sound and noise. Meanwhile, wood grain non-combustible panels are selected to achieve the requirements of A level fire protection.
What they want to design is not only a cafeteria, but also a place for immersion and relaxation during the workday. To meet the requirement of 500 people eating at the same time, weakening the interference, dealing with the dynamic line and spatial hierarchy have become the primary challenge of design.
The project started in May 2018 and finished in September 2019 in Shenzhen.
In order to highlight the conversion, the designers used a large area of wood veneer. The natural tones embellish upon, integrate with, and fuse with the cool temperature of the grey and white lines. The addition of a bar into the spatial experience also makes discussion, gathering, and sharing possible. The layered light and shadow, and a warm dining atmosphere, make the space tranquil and harmonious. No matter who you are, walking into the bustling cafeteria, you will feel a passion for life and food.
The designer team researched on the IKEA restaurant and Tencent canteen, and found that benches should not be used in the canteen because they can affect the dining experience. The designers avoid overlap in the setting of dynamic lines. Also, to increase the utilization rate, the ratio of bar seats and ordinary seats is set as 1:5, and the tables for 4, 6 and 8 people are settled to meet various dining needs.
One Shenzhen Bay is one of three major complexes in China and the first high-end urban complex combining offices, residences, hospitality, and commerce. It received the International Property Award. To disrupt the impression of canteens as humid and sultry environments, designers integrated fashion, modernity, and rhythm into a simple, open space, making use of the unobstructed seascape and sunshine of it to reinterpret the concept of the staff cafeteria.
