Vacation Apartment for Muen interior Design Co.,Ltd
In a tiny apartment in Yilan, Taiwan, a light and dynamic loftstyle vacation space is created with a subtractive mindset. The full height of the interior is 380 cm. The height of the lower part of the mezzanine floor is 120 cm, and the total size is 40 square meters. The use of permeable building materials and structures to reduce spatial divisions, together with suspended stairs and light bars connecting the staircases, extend the visual space. The curved shape is used to guide the space visually through the lines, creating a connection between the interior and the outdoor nature.

This loft style vacation apartment is with the idea of subtraction. The design integrates needs and functions, and incorporates living functions into the aesthetics of the space, using simple lines and primary colors to cover the supporting structure of the building. The use of permeable building materials throughout the project extends the vision and reduces the sense of oppression in small spaces.
loft, penetrating, arcs, suspended stairs, subtraction
A lightweight staircase made of thin steel panels and pine plywood is the visual axis of the design, and a different type of twine staircase is used to increase the penetration of the space. In addition to the reinforcement of the suspended staircase through the connection with the steel frame inside the wall, the main support comes from the steel rope wrapped with twine, and the steel lock and special bandage to connect the floor to the ceiling to strengthen the staircase support.
The designer extended the skeleton from the inner edge of the wall for external support through a hole-cutting technique on the facade wall that connects the external wall of the bathroom, the staircase and the dressing room to increase the structural strength, and welded the light steel staircase to this skeleton so that the floor can achieve a sense of visual floating.
The project started in October 2019 in and finished in January 2020 in Yilan, Taiwan.
The stairs are designed with a perforated shape, allowing sunlight to penetrate through the holes, adding a rhythm of light and shadow and bringing visual interest. In order to strengthen the structure of the mezzanine, light strip is designed on the external wall of the mezzanine dressing room to link the structure between the old and new walls, so that the old and new structures can have a buffer space for deformation when the temperature changes.
Due to the limited space, the designer found that there was about 3.3 square meters of space left in the duct room above the bathroom, excluding the heat storage equipment, during the structural measurement and analysis. After detailed ergonomic measurements, a partition is opened in the wall above the bathroom, and the L-shaped floor-to-ceiling steel platform is used to strengthen the partition structure and add a simple dressing room.
The design motive is to create a sense of vacation in a small space, and to combine the beauty of the mountains and forests, using a curved shape to symbolize the embrace of greenery through the space. The visual guidance is achieved by using the cohesiveness of lines, which leads every space inside to the outside and creates a strong connection with outdoor nature.
