Cultural Heritage for Taiwan Power Company
The remains of the Copper Refinery in Shui Nan Cave are an important heritage of cultural landscape that has witnessed the development of the mining industry in Jin Gua Shih. The present-day Jin Gua Shih sees the vicissitudes of its mining industry that is long gone, but the life it brought is still there, alive with the mountains and the waters. The cultural background of the 13 Layer Remains is known to the world as unique, as the mining in Jin Gua Shih bears witness to a crucial aspect of Taiwanese culture. And then the remains are once again embraced by nature.

Taiwan Power Company integrated its arts and cultural assets in the "Shua Jin Jiu" area. Through art, they tried to subvert the "Shau Nan Dong Refinery" , which is classified as a pollution control site. At the same time, combining many good causes with people who care about this land and have aspirations. Also, the company has appointed international lighting masters Lien Chou along with YI.ng Lighting Design Consultants working together to launch the "13 Layer Remains" lighting project.

From the outset, we has wished to rejuvenate the site as our Mother Earth and would be all encompassing and incorporated with its neighboring villages. In view of this, 2100K color temperature was chosen to go with the outer crust of the structure. Amber light was also adopted as internal lighting for the structure to represent a setting of using fire during the refining process.
At night, the light not only perpetuates the human spirit of the site but also awakens people's understanding of the golden age of Shau Nan Dong area; the light revitalizes the cultural artistry of the area, such as the combination of performing arts and cultural landscapes, the prototype of the 2020 Bright Sea Island Festival...etc.
"Light up 13 Layer Remains" Public Art Lighting Project was officially lit on the night of the Moon Festival on September 13, 2019, and 90 seconds of dynamic lighting was planned in response to the lighting ceremony. However, the lighting design team does not want the light movement changes to be meaningless. Even with dynamic lighting, they still want it to be in line with the original design concept, expressing the inclusive power of nature.
The luminance was devised in such a way that it went up in accord with the rise of each level. Thus the foundation of the structure was lit up with 1 Nit luminance and the higher levels with 6 Nits , presenting and highlighting the quality of "layer".
The reuse of historical architectural space is not only a direct way to involve commercial activities, but also a large-scale public art project to revitalize cultural assets and polluted land, which not only attracts people to see the magnificent nighttime beauty of the "13 Layer Remains", but also becomes a venue to nurture arts and cultural activities.
The mining site is no longer in use since 1973 due to the exhaustion of copper and gold. The basic structure is retained and it preserves the traces of mining for a hundred years. It had been sealed for over 30 years before the rejuvenation. From the outset, we has wished to rejuvenate the site as our Mother Earth and would be all-encompassing and incorporated with its neighboring villages. In view of this, 2100K color temperature was chosen to go with the outer crust of the structure.
