Apartment for Eu.Sei.Que.Vou.Te.Amar
When intervening in a space such as this apartment, the architect must know how to omit, refurbish and integrate. The apartment occupies what was the social floor of a previous Hotel Particulier. Now, set to be the home of a family, it required some restructuring. The refurbishment was to be respectful of its 17th Century heritage and discreet. The interior design project demanded clean lines and shapes and the use of raw materials. For the decoration, however, a careful selection of 21st Century furniture pieces was added to allow for an harmonious combination of the best of both times.

The apartment is integrated into a building originally designed as a Hotel Particulier in what was originaly the social floor. The focus of the design program was on the maintenance and restoration of the architectural heritage of the property, whilst transforming it to cater to the new family, adding 5 bathrooms to the only existing one. The intervention needed to be silent, and therefore, timeless 21st furniture pieces were chosen to effortlessly blend with the 18th-century original grandeur.
refurbishment, historic property, blending styles, luxurious interiors,
Artisan painters were brought in to restore the mural and ceiling paintings. For the new intervention, structural furniture and partitions were created in glass and mirrors, stainless steel and brass. We also find various shades of velvet and diferent marble stones that play with the original colours of the apartment.
The most challenging part of this project was to be able to preserve the rich mural paintings and historic aspects of the property and still introduce new areas that are key to family living, such as more bathrooms and bedrooms.
The project started in May 2019 and was completed in June 2020 in Lisbon, Portugal.
The original area that this apartment now ocupies was a social floor of a Hotel Particulier with eleven living rooms and one bathroom. These ample rooms were adorned with colourful mural and ceiling paintings that the architect wanted to preserve. The adjustment to a residencial program meant bedrooms, bathrooms and a kitchen would need to be integrated in the existing areas. In order to acomplish this in a discreet manner that would not interfeer with the rich decor of the walls and ceilings, structural furniture and partitions were added to create these new spaces, with the adition of materials that only accentuated the existing colors. Glass and mirrors with brass were prefered for these partition units and furniture. The transition between areas has an organic flow. The luxurious vibe and the blend between old and new is felt all throughout the apartment without separation lines.
To start the architect did a carefull research of the building's history as well as the architecture era it illustrates. He also needed to understand the client's needs as well as her family's dynamics in order to better design their ideal home. Then came the design process that involved designing new areas and ways in which these could be integrated in the original layout. The furniture pieces were each carefully researched and selected to create a seamless blend of the design of two different times, 18th and 21st centuries.
The main goal was for the interventions to be silent, so much so that they should go un-noticed and not dispute the attention for the pre-existing details. The history of the home is communicated through the preserved design details and extravagant touches, whilst the story of the residents and their preferences are subtly integrated into the apartment through their modern and minimalist updates.
