Signage and Wayfinding Systems for Shimao Group
Located in the artificial island port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, this work is a city showroom work whose overall design is based on the element of curved surface mimicry. After extracting and summarizing the still and changing interaction between yacht and waves, designers incorporated or put the element into the appearance, adornment, and process design of indoor and outdoor signage. The most difficult part of the project was to select and integrate the common aesthetic elements of the yacht and the ocean, and how to incorporate and convey the spirit of the project site in the design.

Located in the artificial island port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, this work is a city showroom work whose overall design is based on the element of curved surface mimicry. After extracting and summarizing the still and changing interaction between yacht and waves, designers incorporated or put the element into the appearance, adornment and process design of indoor and outdoor signage.
Ocean, Curved surface, Yacht, Artificial Island, Coexistence between human and ocean
Together with seamless splicing technology, the curved surface style has adopted sectional and hand-hammered techniques to ensure perfect curves of its appearance. The indoor signage employs a combination of metal and resin. The aquamarine resin representing the ocean is naturally molded by casting, through which the curvy waves of the metal base are visible, showing the visual complexity of marine elements.
The most difficult part of the project was to select and integrate the common aesthetic elements of the yacht and the ocean, and how to incorporate and convey the spirit of the project site in the design. The design team chose to start with the flowing curved surface to express the character of the project on artificial island at the hub in a mimetic way. Also, the curved surface modeling which stretches a long distance, and the resin casting process are part of the difficulties.
This project was started in Zhuhai, China in October, 2019; The showroom signage design plan was finished in July, 2020; The project was officially opened in September, 2020; Currently, the final stage of the project is still in the process of design and construction; The first stage project will be delivered at the end of 2023.
All signage in this project adopts a modeling language of soft curved surface, which looks harmonious. The combination of metal inlaid with resin in the interior signage design is highly recognizable. In addition, the color scheme in high contrast to the surroundings is memorable in terms of location and shape of signage.
The artificial island on which this project is located carries the future vision of the three cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao in terms of economic, cultural, tourism and marine conservation and development synergy and integration. The design team hopes that in addition to the space guidance, this project can also help visitors sense the development prospect of this island. By way of environment, material, light effects and other facets, this project aims to form diversified visual textures.
The element of curved surface, inspired by the figure of yacht and sea waves of the architecture, means unstoppable development vision and the idea of the coexistence between cities and the ocean. Owing to the future planning of the artificial island that we are working on seems futuristic, designers added quite a few futuristic and scientific details and adornment.
