Art Installation for Jin Ying Yei Tao Pottery Ltd

The work conveys the impression of Luye in an intuitive way. From the ancient aborigines to the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Japanese colonial period, and the Hakka immigrants, the land of Luye has the historical footprints of different groups. Nowadays, pineapple and red oolong tea are the unique agricultural products of the area. In terms of tourism, the annual hot-air balloon is the representative event in Luye. The design team links these different impressions with antlers to symbolize the rebirth and spirit of this land.

Unique Properties

Pottery works pursue closed curves and columnar forms to achieve a stable structure with one-piece molding. However, to replicate the antler shape, the design team takes a short branch forward and a long branch backward to create a height difference and reverse spiral symmetry, and the top of the work is open. In addition, because of the importance of symmetry, the design team has to constantly compare and correct during manual production. Creates a work that can resist up to a magnitude 7 earthquake, which is a breakthrough for the team.

Production Technology

The clay and glaze have been fired over 1,200 degrees, and the minerals and metal elements are melted into stable substances. With its hardness, it is safe and will not fade when exposed to the sun or in contact with human skin. Different from other materials, such as steel sculpture, which exhibits metallic rigidity, and painted pieces, which are limited to flat creations, pottery can be appreciated, touched, or sat by people.

Design Challenge

The pottery requires long hours of handcrafting, and humidity control is the primary challenge. To keep the moisture of the clay to avoid cracks, it must be constantly sprinkled with water or wrapped in canvas. Moreover, to ensure the symmetrical look of the antlers and the smoothness of the curves, the craftsmen must constantly confirm the width of the curves and the shape of the antlers. Therefore, the craftsmen who lead and execute the work need to have a tacit understanding and a high degree of patience. Meanwhile. each person's interpretation of aesthetics often requires positive debate.

Project Duration

The project finished in July 2021 in Taiwan.

Operation Flow

The design team has always insisted on innovation. For example, potteries had placed in green areas, parks, walkways, alleyways, and other corners that people can reach every day. The pottery is scratch-resistant, non-toxic, weather-resistant, and colorfast, allowing the public to interact with it and experience a different presentation of 'pottery'. The design team hopes to break the stereotypes of pottery and blend the popular hot air balloon tourism with the local culture (various ethnic groups) and industry (pineapples, red oolong tea) of Luye to show the hidden beauty of Luye Township.

Research

The local government is planning and designing the area around the Luye Township Office in Taitung County, and invites the design team to create a large-scale pottery artwork at the intersection of the new park next to the Luye Township Office. The Public's impression of pottery is that it can only be seen but not touched. Therefore, when planning the work, the design team want visitors to see the Luye beyond the hot air balloon tour and hoped that the scratch-resistant, non-toxic, weather-resistant, and colorfast nature of the work would encourage interaction with it.

Inspiration

The name of Luye Township has many origins. Some say it was taken from a Japanese place name during the Japanese colonial period, while others say it was called 'Luye' because of the deer that inhabited the area a long time ago. The design team creates this project by combining the legend of the deer with the popular hot air balloon event. The auspicious symbolism of the deer rising with the hot air balloon combined with the antler and the upward spinning track is the theme.
