Production Technology

Magnetisable headrest for easy adjustment. The bottom is equipped with a rubber cushion to reduce noise generation and provide a slip resistant effect to protect the users.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to find a technical solution that combined versatility, comfort and aesthetics. The design team analysed the physical needs of older users and applied ergonomic theories to enhance performance. This resulted in features such as synchronised tilting cushions and backrests, pneumatically adjustable footrests, headrests, and armrests. Adding calligraphic lines enhances the artistry and expressiveness of the overall shape.

Project Duration

Research and development of the product started in ShangHai in May 2023. It is launched in China in September 2023.

Operation Flow

This reclining chair has a backrest and cushion that tilt synchronously to fit the spine curve and promote spinal health. The pneumatically adjustable footrest ensures complete relaxation of the legs, relieving leg fatigue. The three ways adjustable headrest and sliding armrests provide customizable seating options. In addition, by adjusting the angle of the backrest and cushion, users can get up more efficiently and with less effort.

Research

With the ageing population, the needs of older people have become the focus of market attention. Reclining chairs have excellent development prospects as furniture that provides different lying positions for older people. Traditional reclining chairs with limited function cannot perfectly fit the physiological characteristics of the older group and might quickly cause discomfort. It cannot provide practical rising assistance for older users who have difficulty sitting and standing up.

Inspiration

It is inspired by Chinese calligraphy, which is popular among older people. Calligraphers transform the form of Chinese characters into a unique artistic language through techniques such as ink, organisation and stroke, and give lines a unique vitality and strong emotions. Therefore, the designers deconstructed the calligraphy and extracted the lines from it, introducing them into the appearance of the reclining chair, realising a clever combination of traditional art and modern furniture.

Project Overview

Fuyao Chair has been a Bronze winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
