This urban environment project transformed the center of Krasnoyarsk from unfavorable and criminogenic into a place for walking and recreation. It also became the first stationary light&sound show in Russia. The technical goal was to program a dynamic illumination system at the 540m long pedestrian bridge, museum center and concert hall working together as one. The show is supported by original sound and striking visual content based on dynamic light solutions and spectacular optical illusions.
Urban design, lighting, light show, dynamic light, sound show
The lighting system includes over 15,000 RGBW-controlled pixels, 2,000 linear RGBW lamps and 2 LED media facades. They form a system of more than 200 DMX universes with over 100,000 DMX addresses managed by 100 custom automation cabinets. There are several scenarios of its work, launched automatically according to the schedule. If needed, they can be changed or launched remotely. The technical solution withstands harsh winters with strong winds and temperature up to -40 degrees Celsius.
The most difficult task was to translate and interpret the content from the visual language to the dots and lamps on the bridge. Video shows us the whole and indivisible wave but in the reality it is made of thousands of tiny lamps scattered along the bridge cables.
The project started in September 2019 in Krasnoyarsk, Russia and is still running during the city holidays.
The main goal of this project was to transform the urban environment of the Krasnoyarsk city center from the unpleasant place, which doesn’t inspire people into a recreation zone for walking and leisure. Nowadays the reality shows, how the center of Krasnoyarsk is changing and becomes more and more favorable and beloved by local people and tourists from Russia and other countries. The show “The Heart of Siberia” become a sightseeing and one of the visiting card of the city.
Research started with list of the main locations and themes, connected with the Krasnoyarsk Krai. The show is divided into 9 chapters, each one represents immanent subject of the Krasnoyarsk region: Yenisei river (blue color); Taiga, the boreal forest (green); Gold Rush (golden); Heart of Siberia as the synonym of Krasnoyarsk (red); Steel Mill (orange sparks); Krasnoyarsk Pillars (yellow and orange); Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station (light blue); mountains (purple); snow and ice (icy).
The plot of the show reflects genius loci of the city, its natural surroundings and unique features. Due to the physical limitations of the working surfaces it was impossible to display realistic images on the architectural objects except media facades, so the show is based on the emotional design concept with the associative color and visual row, containing symbols of Krasnoyarsk, such as the Yenisei river, Krasny Yar, Krasnoyarsk Pillars etc.
